My Reading List - John Sandford

I have been a big fun of John Sandford's novels. He has his unique way of telling story, of course, every author is different and has his/her unique way. Although all police detective works are typically mouse and cat type of game, John does it so well, and all his books become page turners. Also, readers can see John's opinion to some politics from time to time.

His characters are strong and vivid, Lucas Davenport, Virgil Flowers and Del Capslock, etc. Everyone is so alive in front of you. Highly recommended, every one of them. I will try to complete all John's work. Here is my progress:

Lucas Davenport

Most of Lucas stories, the author gave out the bad guys to readers at the beginning. But the police don't. The story therefore develops in two threads, the killer usually knows the steps the cops would take and always wanted to get at least a step ahead. This is a hard, but effective, way to write a detective story I think. Lucas, who believes ends justify the means, with the philosophy of no harms no foul, often does things beyond rules or law to catch the predators.

1. Rules of Prey (1989)    - Mad Dog had rules for all his murders but missed Carla Ruiz.
2. Shadow Prey (1990)
3. Eyes of Prey (1991)     - Hunt for Michael Bekker, the killer doctor who took his victim's eyes.
Lucas quit under the pressure from his boss Quentin Daniel.
4. Silent Prey (1992)        - Bekker escaped to NYC, Thick and Thin case.
5. Winter Prey (1993)      - Iceman and the sex-ring. Weather comes into picture, Lucas got face scar.
6. Night Prey (1994)        - Koop and Sara Jensen, and air conditioner case
7. Mind Prey (1995)         - John Mail case kidnapping Andi Manette and kids
8. Sudden Prey (1996)     - Dick LaChaise’ revenge.
9. Secret Prey (1998)        - Kresge and Polaris bank merger case
10. Certain Prey (1999)    - Klara Rinker comes to picture, Carmel Loan and Hale Allen
11. Easy Prey (2000)        - Alie'e Maison case
12. Chosen Prey (2001)    - James Qatar, the art history professor case
13. Mortal Prey (2002)     - Clara Rinker case, Lucas gets married
14. Naked Prey (2003)     - Letty West comes to picture
15. Hidden Prey (2004)   - Russian spy ring case
16. Broken Prey (2005)    - Charlie Pope? Ruffee Ignace comes in, 100 Best Songs of the Rock Era
17. Invisible Prey (2007)  - Big and Little, antique painting and quilts
18. Phantom Prey (2008) - Goth community
19. Wicked Prey (2009)   - GOP convention and Whitcomb case
20. Storm Prey (2010)      - Hospital rubbery case
21. Buried Prey (2011)     - Lucas’ first case after graduation
22. Stolen Prey (2012)     - Lucas got mobbed and the plots of stealing drug gang's money
23Silken Prey (2013)     - How the kiddie porn got into the Republican candidate's computer?
24. Field Prey (2014)       - RA and Horn, the cemetery robbers and serial killers of the Black Hole.
25. Extreme Prey (2014)  -

Virgil Flowers

An Agent works for Lucas outside of Twin Cities. Vigil, a womanizer, always has his own unique way to get things done. Aside from his lady friends, he is very talented.

1. Dark of the Moon (2007) - Old man Bill Judd was killed and house on fire case.
2. Heat Lightning (2008)     - Vietnam vets case.
3. Rough Country (2009)    - Erica McDill case, Eagle Nest Lodge and the female rock band.
4. Bad Blood (2010)            - Jacob Flood, Bob Tripp and the World of Spirit cult case
5. Shock Wave (2011)         - Stop the PyeMart construction
6. Mad River (2012)            - Typical cat and mouse game about three teenage killers trying to escape from Police. Not plot but enjoyable reading.
7. Storm Front (2013) - a stone was smuggled into US from Israel by an archaeologist and who was the higher bidder? different style but fun to read.

Kidd

Hacker's world. They solve problems without police.

1. The Fool's Run (1989)
2. The Empress File (1991)
3. The Devil's Code (2000)                - St. John Corbiel, AmMath and Fire wall
4. The Hanged Man's Song (2003)    - Bobby was killed and his laptop was full of secrets

Misc
I really think John should write more stories about " "Forensic bureaucrat Jacob Winter. It could be another interesting series.

The Night Crew (1997)
Dead Watch (2006)  - Jacob Winter’s investigation on Lincoln Bowe’s disappearance.

Oh, as a Lucas fun, how can I forgot his "100 Best Songs of the Rock Era"? The "Broken Prey" was violent enough, but Lucas is like one of us, he likes Rock too...
